How to pick a deck width

It is the number buyers get wrong most often, in both directions — and the one the Gravely® product pages do not put in front of you. Three measurements settle it.

Measure these three things before you shop

A tape measure is a better guide than any brochure. Write these down and any rep can spec the machine in one call.

01 The tightest gate

The narrowest opening the machine has to pass through, in inches, measured between the posts rather than the hinges. This is a ceiling, not a preference — if the machine will not fit, nothing else about it matters.

A deck is not the widest part of a machine: the discharge chute and the tires add inches. Ask a rep for the overall width of the model you are considering, not just its deck size.

02 The mowed acreage

Not the size of the deed — the part you actually cut. Subtract the house, the drive, the beds and the woods. Most people overstate this by a third, and then buy more deck than the ground rewards.

Under an acre, a wider deck mostly buys you a machine that is harder to store and slower around obstacles.

03 The trailer, inside

Measure between the fenders, not the outside rails, and mind the ramp width too. This is the measurement that catches commercial buyers out after the machine is already spec’d.

If you haul two machines, measure for both on the deck at once — that is the constraint, not either machine alone.

What width actually buys you

Time. That is the whole argument for a wider deck.

Below is what each deck width in the Gravely® line does to the clock on open ground. It is arithmetic, not a claim: deck width × ground speed, less a fifth for overlap, turns and trimming.

Calculated at 5 mph on open ground. Your ground is not open: trees, beds, curbs and slopes all move these figures, and on a property with a lot of trimming a wider deck can be slower than a narrower one. The 40″ figure is arithmetic too — that width belongs to the remote-controlled OVIS, which is bought for slopes, not for acres per hour.

Where it goes wrong

Three mistakes account for nearly every deck-width regret we hear about at the parts counter.

  • Buying for the deed, not the cut

Ten acres on paper is often four acres of grass. The wider deck then spends its life turning around instead of cutting.

  • Forgetting the gate until delivery day

The most expensive measurement on this page is the one nobody takes. Measure it before you choose, not after.

  • Buying narrow to save time on the small stuff

If the property is open and you mow it every week, the wider deck pays for itself in hours you get back — every week, for years.

Deck width questions we get

What deck width is best for two acres?

52″ or 60″ on open ground — about 57 and 50 minutes respectively, by the table above. Stay at 42″ or 48″ if you have a narrow gate, close tree lines or a small trailer.

Will a 60-inch deck fit through a standard gate?

Often not. A 60″ deck is five feet before you add the chute and the tires, and many garden gates are four. Measure the opening, then ask us for the overall width of the model.

Is a wider deck always faster?

No. On ground with a lot of obstacles the wider machine trims more and cuts less. Width pays where you can hold a long straight pass.

Does deck width change the cut quality?

Not by itself — deck construction, blade speed and how level the deck is set matter more. That last one we set before delivery.

What deck sizes does Gravely offer?

Across the line: 32″, 34″, 36″, 40″, 42″, 44″, 48″, 52″, 60″, 72″. The comparison table shows which series covers which.
